Relying on one restaurant for a whole day out is risky. Set up a second option before anyone gets hungry. This matters even more with young children.
Don't let lunch turn into a hunt
Picture arriving at a closed restaurant with a hungry child in tow. The backup that helps most is one you have checked already and can reach from wherever you are. Save its details before you set off.
Plan A didn't work. Now what?
The restaurant is shut: go to the second choice you checked
Before you move, contact your second choice to confirm it is open and when last orders are. Work out the route from your current spot, not from the hotel.
- Contact
- Check journey
- Go
You're not sure of its status: ask first, then decide
Look at the certification or what the restaurant itself claims, plus the ingredients and how food is prepared. If things are still unclear, go for food whose status you can confirm.
- Ask
- Check evidence
- Choose again
The children need food now: reach for the food you checked earlier
Find a place where eating is allowed and bring out the backup food you have stored properly. Don't drag a tired family across the city; take a break first, then rethink the plan.
- Sit down
- Backup food
- Replan
None of these options confirms that food is halal. Check its status, the ingredients, any cooking alcohol and how it is prepared.
What to pack on the day
- Packaged food you have already checked for status and ingredients.
- Store it as the label says. An ordinary bag is not enough for food that needs to stay refrigerated.
- Find out where eating is allowed, and bring a bag to carry your rubbish.
The name of a dish proves nothing
Fish, vegetables or "no pork" are not proof of halal certification. Check for cooking alcohol, where the meat comes from and whether preparation is shared. Plan meals around prayer times and wudu access you have confirmed.
