Labels like "no pork", "vegetarian" and "Muslim-friendly" each answer a different question. None of them tells you the whole story on its own. To decide where to eat, you need to know about the meal itself and how the kitchen makes it.
Three things a menu name won't tell you
- Where it comes from: A restaurant saying it is halal is not the same as being certified. Look at where the meat and stock come from, and what any certificate actually covers.
- What goes into the sauce: Mirin, sake, gelatin and other sauce ingredients matter too. Hearing "no pork" does not settle it.
- How it's handled: Shared frying oil, utensils, surfaces and storage all count.
Know what kind of evidence you have
A halal certificate
Look at who issued it, whether it is still valid and what it covers. Is it this branch, the whole kitchen, or only certain products? Keep the source link and note the date you checked.
What the restaurant tells you
Muslim ownership or a halal menu can be helpful to know. Still, neither one proves certification. Write down what staff confirm, and what they could not answer.
What to ask the staff
Meat and stock
Where does the meat come from? What is in the stock, sauces and seasonings? Remember that a dish with no meat you can see might still use meat-based ingredients.
Alcohol and pork-derived ingredients
Name them clearly: sake, mirin, lard and gelatin. An answer of "no pork" says nothing about cooking alcohol.
The kitchen
Ask whether utensils, frying oil, cooking surfaces and storage are shared. If you can't get a clear answer, pick a different place where the status is easier to confirm.
Keep JNTO's inquiry sheet handy
The sheet linked below helps you explain your needs to staff. It helps you communicate, but it is not a halal certificate. After you settle on a restaurant, check its opening hours and last orders, and confirm prayer or wudu access if your family needs it.
