Planning your first Japan trip? Pick where you sleep before what you see
It is tempting to start with a list of sights. Try a different first step: decide how many times you are willing to check out and move. With children or parents in the group, that one decision affects every day of the trip.
Osaka, Kyoto and Nara at a glance
- Osaka: Staying in one place keeps packing to a minimum. Before you book, compare the return trips from the hotel you are actually considering.
- Kyoto: If you have several days here, a night or two in the city can help. Build in time for the hotel change.
- Nara: Give it its own day, with time for the park, a halal meal and a prayer stop you have already checked.
Should you stay in one hotel or two?
Base yourself in Osaka only
This suits families who would rather not pack and unpack. Do Kyoto and Nara as separate day trips. Look at the journey back from your real hotel, not just the city, before you commit.
Divide your nights between Osaka and Kyoto
Worth thinking about when Kyoto gets several days. You wake up nearer the areas you plan to explore. The trade-off is another checkout, more luggage handling and a second check-in.

Sharing out seven days
Flying in and out of Kansai? One way to split a week is two days for Osaka, two for Kyoto and one for Nara. The remaining two cover arriving and leaving. Treat this as a rough share of your time, not a checklist you must finish.
Give each day one main activity. Then slot in meals, local prayer times and travel. Whatever time is left can go to extras.
Look at the area, not just the room
Mark halal meal options that have up-to-date evidence, and check how far the walk from the station is when you are carrying bags. If you plan to pray somewhere other than your hotel, ask the operator about opening hours and wudu facilities. A lower room rate can mean a lot more travelling every day.
