Sapporo in winter: plan less time outdoors

For families used to Malaysian heat, two things matter most in a Sapporo winter: shoes that grip and indoor places to warm up. Pretty snow photos won't show you the ice on the pavement.

The essentials

  • Dress in layers: A base layer, a warm middle layer and an outer coat, chosen to match the forecast.
  • Watch your footing: Wear soles with good grip and keep your steps small on ice.
  • Plan warm-up stops: Save indoor stops on your map, along with halal food and confirmed prayer access.

Packing checklist

  • Winter shoes with grippy soles. Extra ice grips are worth considering.
  • A base layer, a warm middle layer and an outer coat that suit the forecast.
  • Gloves, something to cover the head and spare socks for everyone in the family.
  • Saved map pins for indoor breaks, halal food and confirmed prayer access.

What the ground is like

Begin with a short walk near Odori

Look at the conditions that morning before deciding how far to go. Aurora Town links to Odori Station and gives you an indoor choice. Check which entrances are open and the current access hours. Having an underground network nearby doesn't mean your whole route will be free of ice.

When the pavement is icy

Keep your feet flat and your steps small. Don't rush to catch a crossing signal. On difficult days, cut down the number of stops and give yourself more time for the journeys you can't skip.

Settle meals and prayer in advance

Look up winter prayer times for your travel dates. Get in touch with the venue you've chosen to ask about indoor access and wudu, then line up halal food close by. Once the family is cold, don't count on whichever café happens to be nearest.
