Working out a daily spending budget for Japan

Your daily budget comes from simple subtraction. Begin with the total you have saved for the trip. Take away the costs you already know about. Keep a reserve to one side. Then divide what remains by the number of days you will travel.

Example: a solo traveller over seven days

  • Total budget: RM5,000
  • Flights and luggage: − RM1,500
  • Accommodation: − RM1,200
  • Prebooked transport and tickets: − RM500
  • Emergency reserve: − RM400

RM1,400 ÷ 7 days = RM200 per day

We made these numbers up to show how the sum works. They are not current prices, and they are not an estimate of what Japan will cost you.

What the daily amount has to cover

That daily figure still needs to pay for a lot: halal meals, any local trains you haven't counted yet, trips to prayer spaces, shopping and extra activities. If it looks too thin for what you want to do, change the plan before you book more tickets.

Travelling as a family? Mark every cost as "per person" or "per room". Take the whole group's remaining budget and divide it by the number of days to get one family allowance per day. Be careful not to divide room costs more than once.

Track ringgit and yen together

Write down the price in JPY, the exchange rate you used and any bank fees. Ask your bank about using your card overseas and about withdrawal limits. The Seven Bank page below lists the cards it supports, but it can't promise your card will work or that there will be no fees.
